Sakata Port prospered as an important port on the western sea route between Osaka and the Sea of Japan coast during the Edo period.
In those days, the Honma Family was one of the most prosperous merchants and shipping agents in Japan. The Honma Family was also one of the biggest landowners and richest families in Japan.
The Honma Historical Residence was built in 1768 by Honma Mitsuoka, the third generation of the Honma Family.
At first, It was built for the Sakai Family, the Shonai feudal lord. Later, the Sakai Family gave it to the Honma Family.
Half of this building is built in the samurai architectural style and half is built in the merchant architectural style.
Despite being wealthy, the Honma Family spent their days simply and frugally.

酒田港は江戸時代、大阪と日本海沿岸を結ぶ西回り航路の主要な港として、大変繁栄しました。
本間家は当時、日本で最も栄えた商人、海運業者のひとつでした。日本有数の地主でもあり、日本屈指の財力を持っていました。
本間家旧本邸は、1768年に三代目本間光丘により建てられました。
当初この邸宅は、荘内藩主である酒井家に献上され、その後、酒井家より本間家へと返還・贈与されました。
この邸宅の建築様式は、半分が武家屋敷、半分が商家造りになっています。
本間家は大変裕福だったにも関わらず、日々の生活は質素倹約を旨としたものでした。
